Summary:

The overall objective of the project is the production of biomethane and second generation microbial protein (MP) using biomethane upgraded with green H₂ as carbon source, and nitrogen recovered from ammonium-rich effluents. A three-stage biogas upgrading system is studied with the objective of upgrading biogas using a low-energy biological process. Different ammonium-rich waste effluents will be used as nutrient sources for these bioreactors, and their effects on microbial populations will be evaluated for the first time.
The production of MP from biomethane is of great interest for the development of sustainable aquaculture systems using alternative protein sources. In this project, the nitrogen source for MP production will be obtained by stripping the ammonium-rich effluent. Samples of MP will be selected for in vivo assays with zebrafish. Thus, the efficacy of this safety barrier for the final application of the protein will be studied by analyzing the effect of its use on protein quality
